Old Washing Machine Scrap Price: What You Should Expect

Short answer: an old washing machine scrap price depends first on whether the machine still works, then on its type and what’s inside it. A working machine is valued as a machine someone can use again. A dead one is valued on its motor, steel drum, pump and cabinet, minus the parts that carry no metal value, like plastic tubs and the heavy weight blocks in front loaders. Nobody can give you an honest per-kg figure for a whole machine, so ask for a quote from photos before pickup. Book today, 4 November 2026, to clear it before Dhanteras.

Old washing machine scrap price: start with the condition

Before type, brand or age, one question decides how your machine is valued: can someone use it again? Most machines that come out of Mumbai flats around Diwali fall into one of three groups.

1. Working

It fills, washes, drains and spins. A working machine is valued as a machine first, so brand, capacity, type and age all count. This is where you get the most for it.

2. Faulty

It powers on but won’t spin, won’t drain, leaks, shows an error code, or the timer knob turns without doing anything. Often it’s a drain pump, a belt, a timer or a control board. Someone who repairs machines may want it for parts, and even if not, the motor and drum still carry value. Many machines people call “dead” are really in this group.

3. Scrap

The cabinet base has rusted through from years on a wet bathroom floor, the tub is cracked, or it has sat on the balcony for years. Nobody will repair it. It’s valued on what can be recovered: the motor’s copper or aluminium windings, a stainless steel drum if it has one, the steel cabinet and the smaller metal parts.

If you’re not sure which group yours is in, say so honestly and send photos. Our old appliances pickup page lists top load, front load and semi-automatic machines, working or not, and each one is quoted per item from photos.

Semi-automatic, top load or front load: what’s inside

The three common types are built very differently, and that changes what a scrap buyer can recover from them.

What adds to and what lowers the value of each type, and six things to do before the pickup team comes.

Semi-automatic

Two tubs side by side, one to wash and one to spin. The body and tubs are mostly plastic. The value sits in the two motors, one for each tub, and in the timers if the machine still works. A working semi-automatic still has buyers, especially in homes without a constant water supply.

Fully automatic top load

One tub, loaded from the top. Most have a stainless steel inner drum, one motor, a drain pump and a control board. The steel drum and motor are where the recoverable value is. A rusted base or a dead control board pulls the value down.

Front load

Door in front with a glass window. Front loaders have a steel drum and a motor, but they also carry heavy weight blocks to keep the drum steady while it spins. Those blocks make the machine heavy without adding metal value, which is one reason weighing a whole front loader and multiplying by a rate gives a misleading number. A working front loader is valued mainly as a machine to reuse.

What decides the price of an old washing machine

There’s no single “washing machine rate”. Two machines of the same age can be worth very different amounts. These are the things a fair buyer looks at:

FactorWhy it mattersWhat you can do
Working or notA working machine can be reused; a dead one is valued on parts and metalRun one empty cycle the day before and note what works
TypeSemi-automatic, top load and front load have different parts insideMention the type and capacity (in kg) when you message
MotorThe windings are copper or aluminium, the main metal value in a dead machineDon’t let anyone remove it before the buyer sees the machine
DrumA stainless steel drum adds value; a plastic tub adds very littleLeave the drum in place, even if the machine is broken
Cabinet conditionA rusted base or dented body reduces reuse valueWipe it down so the photos show its real condition
Missing partsLid, door, hoses and stand matter for a machine that will be reusedKeep every part together with the machine
AccessUpper floors without a lift take more effortTell the buyer the floor and whether the lift can take it

Metal prices move every day. Our live scrap rates page shows the day’s metal rates, and the copper rate calculator works out the value of copper by weight. A whole washing machine, though, is quoted per piece after it’s checked, because so much of its weight is plastic, rubber and counterweight rather than metal.

Why a machine shouldn’t be broken up in the lane

Washing machines are electrical and electronic equipment, so they come under India’s E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, which are built around getting e-waste to registered recyclers (overview on Mondaq). In practice, a lot of it still ends up with informal dismantlers who pull out the motor and burn or dump the rest.

Mumbai has only recently started collecting household e-waste separately. The Free Press Journal reported in September 2025 that a BMC-backed collection run with a private recycler gathered about 21,000 kg of e-waste in its first five months, of which about 5,354 kg came from the general public. Before that, the report says, there was no dedicated system for separate e-waste collection in the city.

The Deccan Herald piece quotes a Mumbai environment watchdog on where the gap lies:

“The implementation is the key which is missing.”B N Kumar, director, NatConnect Foundation, in Deccan Herald, “E-waste piles up as recycling remains informal”, 9 March 2025

For a household, the practical step is simple: sell to a buyer who sends appliances through government-authorised recyclers, and keep the machine whole until it’s picked up.

Six things to do before pickup day

  1. Run a last empty cycle, then unplug. It tells you, honestly, whether it fills, drains and spins, and it rinses out detergent.
  2. Drain and dry it. Lower the drain hose into a bucket to empty the last water, then leave the lid or door open for a day so it doesn’t drip down the stairs.
  3. Turn off the tap and disconnect the inlet hose. Close the water tap first, then unscrew the hose. Tie both hoses to the machine.
  4. Keep the parts together. Lid, door, hoses, stand and any trolley go with the machine.
  5. Photograph the model sticker. It’s usually on the back or under the lid. Send it with a front photo and one of the control panel.
  6. Clear the way. Move buckets and drying stands from the bathroom or balcony, tell the watchman, and tell us the floor and whether the lift can take it.

Exchange offer, online listing or a doorstep buyer?

If you’re buying a new machine for Dhanteras, there are three usual ways to clear the old one.

Store exchange offerSelling online yourselfDoorstep buyer like National Recycling
Best forBuying the new machine from the same storeA working, fairly new machineAny condition: working, faulty or scrap
EffortLow, but tied to the new purchasePhotos, calls, visits, hagglingPhotos on WhatsApp, one visit
Dead machinesDepends on the offer’s termsHard to sellPicked up and paid for
Carrying it downUsually arranged with deliveryBuyer’s problem, or yoursCarried down from any floor
How you’re paidAdjusted in the new billWhatever you agreeCash or UPI before we leave
Where it ends upDepends on the store’s partnerUnknownGovernment-authorised recyclers

If the exchange value is good and the timing works, take it. If the new machine is coming from an online sale, or the old one is dead, or there’s a fridge or TV to clear as well, one pickup is usually simpler. We’ve covered the other big appliances in selling an old fridge in Mumbai and what decides an old AC’s scrap price.

Clearing more than the machine

An old washing machine usually comes with the stuff around it: a broken stabiliser, old buckets, the steel stand. While you’re at it, our Diwali cleaning guide goes room by room. If there are old bartan in the kitchen loft, our Hinglish guide on purane bartan kahan beche explains how pital, tamba and steel are priced, and the old utensils page covers how they’re weighed.

If several families in your building are upgrading appliances this Diwali, a housing society drive brings it all down on one morning.

In a society drive, heavy appliances are collected from each flat while everything else is weighed in the compound.

Frequently asked questions

What is the scrap price of an old washing machine?

There’s no fixed rate for a whole machine. It depends on whether it works, its type (semi-automatic, top load or front load), the motor and drum, and its condition. Send photos on WhatsApp for a quote before pickup.

Can I sell a washing machine that doesn’t work?

Yes. Working, faulty or completely dead, it’s bought. A non-working machine is priced on its motor, drum and other metal parts.

Is a front load machine worth more as scrap because it’s heavier?

Not necessarily. Front loaders carry heavy weight blocks that steady the drum but have no metal value, so weight alone is misleading. A working front loader is valued mainly on reuse.

Should I remove the motor before selling?

No. Keep the machine whole. Removing parts lowers the value of a machine that could be reused, and the rest often gets dumped.

Do I have to bring the washing machine down myself?

No. The team carries it down from any floor. Tell us the floor and whether the lift can take it when you message.

When should I book to clear an old washing machine before Diwali?

Book today, 4 November 2026, to clear it before Dhanteras on Friday 6 November. Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November.
