Short answer: to sell an old fridge in Mumbai, first decide which of three groups it belongs to: working, not cooling, or scrap. A working fridge is valued as a fridge you can still use. A fridge that runs but doesn’t cool is valued on its compressor, coils and body. A rusted or long-dead one is valued on the steel, copper and aluminium inside. Send three photos, get a quote before anyone comes, and have it carried down from your floor and paid for on the spot. Book by 4 November 2026 to clear it before Dhanteras.

Sell old fridge in Mumbai: first, which kind do you have?
Most old fridges that come out of Mumbai flats at Diwali fall into one of three groups. The group matters more than the brand, because it decides how the fridge is valued and who will want it.
1. Working
It cools within a few hours of being switched on, the door seals close, and the shelves and trays are all there. This is the fridge that’s being replaced because the family wants a bigger one or a frost-free model, not because the old one died. A working fridge can be used again, so it’s valued as a fridge first. Size, brand, single or double door, and age all matter here.
2. Not cooling
The light comes on and you can hear the compressor, but the inside stays warm. Or the freezer works and the lower section doesn’t. Common causes are a gas leak, a failed thermostat or control board, or a tired compressor. Someone who repairs fridges may still want it, and even if not, the compressor, condenser coil and steel body all have value. This is where most “dead” fridges actually belong.
3. Scrap
Rusted at the bottom, doors cracked, sitting unplugged in the passage or on the terrace for years. Nobody is going to repair it. It’s valued on the material that can be recovered from it: the steel cabinet, the copper and aluminium in the cooling circuit, and the compressor. It should still go to someone who handles the refrigerant gas properly, which we come to below.
If you’re not sure which group yours is in, that’s fine. Send photos and say honestly whether it works. Our old appliances pickup page explains that working, half-working and dead fridges are all bought, and non-working ones are priced on their metal and parts.
What decides the price of an old fridge
There’s no single “fridge rate”. Two fridges of the same age can be worth very different amounts. These are the things a fair buyer looks at:
| Factor | Why it matters | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Working or not | A working fridge can be reused; a dead one is valued on parts and metal | Switch it on the day before and check it cools |
| Size and type | Double door and frost-free models are larger and have more material | Send the model sticker photo (inside the door or at the back) |
| Compressor | The heaviest single part, with copper windings inside | Don’t let anyone remove it before the buyer sees the fridge |
| Condenser coil | Copper or aluminium coils add to the value | Keep the back panel and coils intact |
| Body condition | Heavy rust and broken doors reduce reuse value | Wipe it down; a clean fridge is easier to judge from photos |
| Missing parts | Shelves, trays and the crisper box matter for a working fridge | Keep every shelf and tray inside |
| Access | Upper floors without a lift take more effort | Tell the buyer the floor and whether there’s a lift |
The metal inside an old fridge is mostly steel, with smaller amounts of copper and aluminium in the compressor and cooling circuit. Metal prices move every day; if you want a feel for them, our live scrap rates page shows the day’s copper, brass and aluminium rates, and the copper rate calculator works out the value of copper by weight. A whole fridge, though, is quoted per piece after checking it, not by putting the full cabinet on a scale and multiplying.
That’s also why a photo quote is useful. It tells you roughly what to expect before anyone comes up to your flat, so you’re not bargaining at the door.
Why an old fridge shouldn’t be broken open in the lane
Every fridge has a sealed cooling circuit with refrigerant gas inside. Older fridges in India used gases that damage the ozone layer or warm the climate many times more than carbon dioxide; many newer ones use different gases, but all of them need to be handled properly. When a fridge is cut open in a lane to pull out the copper, that gas simply escapes.
Down To Earth put the risk plainly in a May 2025 report on India’s cooling sector:
“Improper disposal of cooling appliances makes them extremely hazardous.”Down To Earth, “For India, cooling is now a necessity”, by Shrotik Bose, 30 May 2025
The same report says that without intervention, hydrofluorocarbon emissions from refrigerants in India’s cooling devices could reach 270 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent a year by 2050.
Sources: Down To Earth, 30 May 2025; Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), issue brief on lifecycle refrigerant management, 26 May 2023, citing MoEFCC 2019.
The CEEW brief adds that end-of-life handling of cooling appliances in India is mainly done by the informal sector, where valuable parts are pulled out and refrigerants are released because they have little resale value. In other words, the gas is lost exactly at the moment the fridge is scrapped.
Fridges are also covered by India’s E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, which are built around getting e-waste to registered recyclers (overview by Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas). For a household, the practical step is simple: sell to a buyer who sends appliances through government-authorised recyclers, and don’t let the fridge be stripped on the road outside your building.

Five things to do the day before pickup
- Empty it and switch it off. Take everything out a day early and unplug it. A fridge that’s still cold on pickup day drips all the way down the stairs.
- Defrost and wipe it out. Leave the doors open with a towel underneath, then wipe out the water and any smell.
- Keep the shelves and trays inside. For a working fridge, missing shelves lower the value. Tape them in place so they don’t rattle.
- Photograph the model sticker. It’s usually on the inside wall of the fridge section or at the back. Send it with a front photo and a back photo.
- Clear the way. Move shoe racks and plants from the passage, and tell the watchman a pickup is coming. Tell us the floor and whether the lift can take a fridge.
One thing not to do: don’t let a local helper “take out the copper” first to get a better rate. You lose the compressor and coil value, and the gas is released.
Exchange offer, OLX or a scrap buyer?
In the weeks before Dhanteras, most families buying a new fridge have three ways to get rid of the old one. Each suits a different kind of fridge.
| Store exchange offer | Selling online yourself | Doorstep buyer like National Recycling | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Buying a new fridge from the same store on the same day | A working, fairly new fridge | Any condition: working, not cooling or scrap |
| Effort | Low, but tied to the new purchase | Photos, calls, visits, haggling | Photos on WhatsApp, one visit |
| Dead fridges | Depends on the offer’s terms | Hard to sell | Picked up and paid for |
| Carrying it down | Usually arranged with delivery | Buyer’s problem, or yours | Carried down from any floor |
| How you’re paid | Adjusted in the new bill | Whatever you agree | Cash or UPI before we leave |
| Where it ends up | Depends on the store’s partner | Unknown | Government-authorised recyclers |
If the exchange value on offer is good and the timing works, take it. If the new fridge is coming from an online sale, if the old one is dead, or if you’ve got a TV, AC or washing machine to clear as well, a single pickup is usually simpler. We wrote about the AC side of this in what decides an old AC’s scrap price.
For a look at how fridges are taken apart at a proper recycling line, with the gas and oil removed before shredding, this video walks through the steps:

Clearing more than the fridge
A new fridge usually means a bit of reorganising: the old stabiliser, the steel vessels that lived on top, boxes from the Diwali sale. It’s worth doing in one visit. Our Diwali cleaning guide goes room by room, and for old bartan there’s a separate page on selling old brass, copper and steel utensils.
If several families in your building are replacing appliances, a housing society drive brings it all down on one morning. Our step-by-step guide for society secretaries explains how to set one up in a week.
How a fridge pickup works with National Recycling
- WhatsApp us three photos: front, back and the model sticker, with your area and floor.
- Get a quote based on the photos and whether it works, before we come.
- On pickup day the team checks the fridge in front of you and carries it down from any floor, lift or no lift.

Frequently asked questions
Can I sell an old fridge in Mumbai that doesn’t work?
Yes. Working, not cooling or completely dead, it’s bought. A non-working fridge is priced on its compressor, coils and metal.
How is the price of an old fridge decided?
By whether it works, its size and type, the condition of the body, and whether parts like the compressor, coils and shelves are intact. Send photos on WhatsApp for a quote before pickup.
Do I have to bring the fridge down myself?
No. The team carries it down from any floor, including buildings without a lift.
Should I remove the copper or compressor before selling?
No. Removing parts lowers the value and releases the refrigerant gas. Keep the fridge whole and let the buyer check it.
How do I get paid for an old fridge?
In cash or UPI, before the team leaves, and you get a certificate for the pickup.
When should I book to clear an old fridge before Diwali?
Book by 4 November 2026 to clear it before Dhanteras on Friday 6 November. Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November.
