Copper wire scrap rate in Mumbai today
Our copper buying rate today is updated daily, tracked daily against the international copper price. Below: what different kinds of copper wire scrap fetch, and exactly how much copper sits inside a coil of house wire.

How copper wire scrap is graded
| Grade | What it is | How it’s priced |
|---|---|---|
| Bright bare copper | Clean, stripped, unalloyed wire, no coating or solder | At or near our headline copper rate |
| Bare copper, mixed | Stripped but tinned, slightly oxidised, or mixed gauges | A few percent below bright |
| Insulated house wire | PVC-insulated single-core wire, offcuts and short lengths | On recoverable copper, roughly 70 to 88% of the bare value |
| Multi-core and armoured cable | Sheathed cables, with or without steel armour | Lower copper share; quoted on a sample strip |
| Data, telephone, fine wire | Thin conductors with a lot of insulation | Lowest copper yield; quoted on inspection |
Unused, full-length branded coils are worth far more than their copper. Don’t sell them as scrap: get a surplus buy-back quote instead.
Copper content per coil
Copper weight is simply conductor area × length × density. This table is worked out at nominal size for single-core wire. Multiply by the number of cores for multi-core cable.
| Size | 90 m coil | 300 m coil | Per km |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.75 sq mm | 0.60 kg | 2.02 kg | 6.7 kg |
| 1 sq mm | 0.81 kg | 2.69 kg | 9.0 kg |
| 1.5 sq mm | 1.21 kg | 4.03 kg | 13.4 kg |
| 2.5 sq mm | 2.02 kg | 6.72 kg | 22.4 kg |
| 4 sq mm | 3.23 kg | 10.75 kg | 35.8 kg |
| 6 sq mm | 4.84 kg | 16.13 kg | 53.8 kg |
| 10 sq mm | 8.06 kg | 26.88 kg | 89.6 kg |
| 16 sq mm | 12.90 kg | 43.01 kg | 143.4 kg |
| 25 sq mm | 20.16 kg | 67.20 kg | 224.0 kg |
Copper in your wire: calculator
Based on nominal conductor size and copper density of 8.96 g/cm³. Real conductors can be slightly lighter. Insulated wire is bought on recoverable copper, so expect less than the bare-copper value shown.
Why copper sets the floor for all wire
Every coil of wire, new or old, is worth at least the copper inside it. That's why we use copper as the floor in every surplus quote: if a coil can't be resold as new, its copper still goes back into the supply chain at today's rate. Our full scrap rate table shows all metals.
Frequently asked questions
What is the copper wire scrap rate in Mumbai today?
National Recycling's copper buying rate is updated daily against the international copper price and shown at the top of this page. Insulated wire is priced on its recoverable copper, so it fetches less per kg than bare copper.
How much copper is in a 90 m coil of 1.5 sq mm wire?
About 1.2 kg at nominal size: 1.5 sq mm times 90 m gives 135 cubic cm, and copper weighs 8.96 g per cubic cm.
Should I strip insulated wire before selling?
Stripping raises the price per kg, but takes time and equipment. For small quantities it rarely pays; for large lots ask us to quote both ways.
Is unused wire worth more than scrap?
Yes. Sealed or full-length branded coils are bought as resaleable stock, usually at well above their copper value.
Why do some websites show a much lower copper rate?
Many sites publish averages with no stated source or date. Our rate is our own buying price for business quantities, tied to the live copper market and dated every day.
