The wire market, explained by the people who handle the copper
Mumbai trades a huge volume of branded copper wire outside the official dealer chain: project surplus, dealer overstock, and a large unbilled grey market. National Recycling is building the first open, documented channel for it. Surplus bought from its owner, checked coil by coil, sold with a GST bill, and backed by live copper pricing.
How the market actually works
Wire brands publish price lists, but almost nobody pays the printed price. Retail buyers get one discount, dealers and big builders a much deeper one. Between those prices, and the copper inside the coil, sits a margin that a whole informal trade lives on.
| Price level | Who pays it | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MRP / list price | Almost nobody | The ceiling. Brand price lists change with copper. |
| Retail price | Homeowners, small electricians | Often well below MRP; online listings show double-digit discounts. |
| Dealer / project net | Builders, contractors, wholesalers | Negotiated, unpublished, the deepest legitimate price. |
| Grey market | Traders, small contractors | Below dealer net, because the stock was never paid for or never billed. |
| Copper value | Recyclers | The floor under every coil, set daily by the copper market. |
Where surplus wire comes from
Project-end surplus
Over-ordering, design changes and cancelled phases leave sealed coils with the builder who paid for them.
Dealer overstock
Slow-moving sizes, discontinued colours and old packaging sitting with distributors.
Site leakage
Unused wire sold off by whoever is on site instead of being returned to the owner. Widespread, and a criminal matter for the buyer too.
Unbilled and fake stock
Cash sales outside the tax system, and counterfeit coils dressed up as top brands.
We work only with the first two. Builders: here’s how to stop the leakage.
What we do
Guides
Our principles
- We buy only from the documented owner of the material
- Bank transfers only, never cash
- Every coil checked for genuine brand markings before resale
- Every sale billed with GST
- Copper as the floor: a quote never falls below what the metal is worth
Frequently asked questions
What is the Mumbai wire resale market?
A large trade in branded copper house wire and cables outside the official dealer chain, made up of project surplus, dealer overstock, and an unbilled grey market. Lohar Chawl in Kalbadevi is Mumbai’s largest wholesale electrical market and the centre of much of this trade.
Why is wire sold below MRP?
Wire brands publish list prices but sell to dealers and large buyers at deep negotiated discounts. Surplus and grey stock is then resold below the dealer price.
Is buying surplus wire legal?
Yes, when it is bought from its owner with paperwork. Buying wire that was taken from a site by someone other than the owner is treated in law as receiving stolen property.
What does National Recycling do in the wire market?
We buy surplus wire from builders and contractors, verify it, and resell it with a GST bill. Anything not resaleable is recycled at the live copper rate.
Brand names such as Polycab, KEI, RR Kabel, Finolex and Havells belong to their owners. National Recycling Co. is not an authorised dealer or distributor of any wire brand and is not affiliated with them. We buy surplus only from its documented owner.
