HMS scrap rate today: heavy melting scrap price per tonne

What HMS 1, HMS 2 and 80:20 mixes fetch in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, how each grade is judged, and what gets your load the top of the range.

HMS grades and how they price

Heavy melting scrap is thick, unalloyed iron and steel that goes straight into furnaces. Mills pay for density and cleanliness, so the grade decides where your load sits against the base rate.

Grade What it is Typical sources Where it prices
HMS 1 Clean steel roughly 6 mm and thicker, cut to furnace size Beams, plates, channels, heavy fabrication offcuts Top of the range
HMS 2 Thinner steel, roughly 3–6 mm, may include light galvanised or painted pieces Sheet structures, racks, light fabrication, old equipment bodies Below HMS 1
HMS 1&2 (80:20) The common traded mix: mostly HMS 1 with some HMS 2 Mixed demolition and plant clearance Between the two
Plate & structural Heavy plates and sections, very low contamination Steel structures, sheds, tanks At or above HMS 1
Cast iron Brittle iron castings, machine bases, pipes Old machinery, valve bodies, manhole frames Priced separately, near the iron rate

Thickness guides above are trade practice, not a legal standard. We grade your load on site and explain the grade before you agree to a rate.

Getting the top of the range

  • Keep HMS 1 separate from thin sheet. One mixed heap gets priced at the lower grade.
  • Remove non-metal attachments: wood, rubber, concrete, glass and plastic all get deducted.
  • Keep alloys out. Stainless steel, manganese steel and copper-bearing parts are worth more sold separately.
  • Drain tanks and pipes. Oil, water and chemicals are a safety issue and a deduction.
  • Cut oversized pieces if you can, or tell us upfront so we bring cutting equipment.

Questions we get asked

What is HMS scrap?

HMS stands for heavy melting scrap: thick, unalloyed iron and steel that steel mills and induction furnaces melt directly. It is the main traded grade of ferrous scrap.

What is the difference between HMS 1 and HMS 2?

HMS 1 is thicker and cleaner steel, generally about 6 mm and above. HMS 2 is thinner material and may include light coated pieces, so it prices lower.

Is HMS priced per kg or per tonne?

Bulk HMS is usually quoted per tonne (MT). Small lots are paid per kg against our daily iron and steel rates.

Do you buy HMS from demolition sites?

Yes, including structural steel from building and plant dismantling across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. See our dismantling service.
