Where to Donate Old Electronics in Mumbai (2026 Guide)

Short answer: In Mumbai you can give old electronics to five kinds of places, depending on the item’s condition:

  • Working laptops, tablets and phones: education NGOs such as Bhumi and Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust, which pass them on to students.
  • Anything with resale value: brand exchange offers or resale platforms.
  • Items from a brand that runs a take-back scheme: the manufacturer’s collection points.
  • Broken or very old items: an MPCB-authorised e-waste collector or recycler.
  • Mixed loads of 5+ items: a doorstep pickup service such as National Recycling, which covers Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai.

Never put electronics in household garbage or give them to informal scrap burners. Wipe your data first.

Places that accept old electronics

Working devices · NGO

Bhumi: tech donation programme

Bhumi collects usable laptops, desktops, tablets and smartphones for its education work in several cities, including Mumbai. It prefers Windows 7 or later, a dual-core processor, at least 1 GB RAM and 40 GB storage. Donate through the contact form on Bhumi’s tech donation page. Bhumi warns that it never asks for personal details on WhatsApp.

Working devices · NGO

Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust

This Mumbai-based trust accepts old laptops and computers, refurbishes them and sends them to schools. It arranges pickup once you fill in its form. See Ratna Nidhi’s laptop donation page.

Any condition · Manufacturer

Brand take-back and collection points

Under India’s E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022, electronics producers must collect back a share of what they sell. Many brands list collection points or pickup numbers on their websites, so search “[brand name] e-waste collection”.

Broken or old · Authorised recyclers

MPCB-authorised collectors and recyclers

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board publishes a list of authorised e-waste dismantlers and recyclers. Choosing one of them means your items are processed legally rather than burnt for copper.

Municipal · BMC

BMC e-waste collection

BMC has run e-waste collection points with partners in the past. In July 2026 its General Body cleared a proposal for a city-wide e-waste policy with a network of authorised collection centres. Check your ward office or the BMC website for the current list before you go.

Questions

Donating electronics in Mumbai: FAQs

Where can I donate old electronics in Mumbai?

Give working laptops, tablets and phones to education NGOs such as Bhumi or Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust. Use brand take-back schemes or MPCB-authorised e-waste collectors for broken items. For doorstep pickup of 5 or more items across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, use a collection service such as National Recycling.

Can I donate electronics that don’t work?

Yes, but give them to an authorised e-waste collector or recycler, not an NGO. NGOs usually need working devices they can pass on. Collectors dismantle broken items and recycle them safely.

Is there free e-waste pickup in Mumbai?

Several collectors offer free pickup above a minimum quantity. National Recycling picks up free from 5 items in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. Smaller loads can be dropped off free at its Dahisar West office.

Can I throw old electronics in the garbage in Mumbai?

No. E-waste contains lead, mercury and other hazardous materials. Under the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2022 it should go to authorised collectors or recyclers, not household garbage.

Do I get a tax deduction for donating electronics?

No. Donations of goods do not qualify for an 80G deduction. Only money donations to approved institutions do. You can still ask for a receipt or certificate listing what you gave.

How do I protect my data before donating a phone or laptop?

Back up your data, sign out of all accounts, turn off Find My on Apple devices, remove SIM and memory cards, then factory reset. For laptops, ask the collector to wipe or destroy the drive.
