Where to Donate an Old Laptop in Mumbai: Your Options, Honestly Compared

By National Recycling Co. · Updated 18 October 2026 · 6 min read

The right place to donate an old laptop depends on two things: how old it is, and whether it still works. A recent working laptop can help a student through an NGO or school. An 8-year-old one, or one that won’t switch on, usually can’t, and is better recycled properly with your data destroyed. Here’s how to choose.

Our NGO promise

A laptop reaches an NGO only when we’re sure it’s clean and fit for reuse

Some of the working laptops donated to us go on to NGOs. Before any laptop leaves us for an NGO, two things must be true:

  1. All your data is wiped – the drive is fully erased and the operating system freshly installed, so nothing of yours can be recovered.
  2. It is genuinely fit for reuse – it boots reliably, runs current software, and someone can actually use it for study or work.

If we are not confident on both, it does not go to an NGO. The drive is physically destroyed and the laptop is recycled through a licensed recycling partner instead. Your Green Certificate records how it was handled.

Quick answer: where should your laptop go?

5–8 years old, works but slowAsk an NGO first; if they can’t use it, a recycler that refurbishesSome NGOs accept it after an SSD upgrade; many don’t

Option 1: Donate to an NGO or school

For a laptop that still works well, an NGO or school working on education or digital literacy is the most meaningful home. Before you go, know what most of them need:

  • It must work reliably and boot in a reasonable time
  • It should run Windows 10 or 11 (or a current Chromebook / macOS version). Most can’t support Windows 7 machines
  • Battery holds some charge and the charger is included
  • It’s wiped and has a fresh operating system

Questions to ask an NGO before donating:

  1. Do you accept laptops of this age and condition?
  2. Who will use it, and will you set it up for them?
  3. Do you wipe donated laptops, or should I do it first?
  4. What do you do with laptops you can’t use? (If the answer is unclear, recycle those yourself.)

Why many NGOs turn down old laptops: a slow 10-year-old machine costs them time to repair and support, and if it can’t be used it becomes their e-waste problem. Donating a laptop they can actually use helps far more than donating one they’ll have to dispose of.

Option 2: Give it to someone you know

A student in your building, a relative, or your house help’s children may need a basic laptop for classes. It’s the most direct form of donation. Wipe it, reinstall Windows, include the charger, and check it can handle video calls if it’s for online classes.

Option 3: Brand take-back programmes

Most major laptop brands sold in India run a take-back or recycling programme under the country’s e-waste rules. Check your brand’s India support website for current drop-off points or collection options. These are good for disposal, though you may need to travel to a drop-off point and you won’t usually get a certificate in your name.

Option 4: Donate to an authorised e-waste recycler

For laptops that are too old, too slow or too broken for an NGO, which is most of the laptops sitting in Mumbai cupboards, an authorised recycler is the responsible choice. With National Recycling:

  • Free pickup across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, even for one laptop
  • Hard drive wiped or physically destroyed, or removed and handed back to you
  • Working laptops are refurbished and reused, and some go to NGOs, but only after a full data wipe and a reuse check. If we are not confident, they are recycled instead.
  • Green Certificate in your name, sent on WhatsApp
  • Prefer cash? Old laptops are bought at scrap value: see laptop scrap prices

Option 5: A society e-waste drive

If your neighbours have old laptops too, collect them together. Run a society e-waste drive: we set up a collection point, residents drop off old laptops, phones and chargers, and the value of what’s collected goes to your society fund.

Where not to send an old laptop

  • The dustbin. Lithium-ion batteries can catch fire in garbage trucks, and circuit boards contain lead.
  • Anyone who won’t deal with the drive. Even a dead laptop’s hard disk can be read on another computer.
  • An informal scrap chain that burns parts to recover metal. The fumes are toxic for the people doing it.

Before you donate anywhere

  1. Back up your files and sign out of Microsoft, Google and Apple ID
  2. Do a full reset with “Clean data” on: how to wipe a laptop before donating
  3. Keep the charger with it
  4. Laptop won’t switch on? Ask the receiver to destroy the drive, or remove it yourself. See dead laptop pickup

Laptop too old for an NGO?

We’ll collect it free, destroy the data and send you a Green Certificate. Working ones get a second life, and only clean, reuse-ready laptops ever go to an NGO.

FAQs

Where can I donate an old laptop in Mumbai?
A working laptop under about 5 years old can go to an NGO, a school or a student you know. Older, slow or dead laptops are best donated to an authorised e-waste recycler such as National Recycling, which collects free across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, destroys the data and issues a Green Certificate.
Do NGOs accept laptops that don’t work?
Usually not. Most NGOs need laptops that work and run current software. Donate non-working laptops to an authorised recycler instead.
Where can I donate a laptop that doesn’t switch on?
To an authorised e-waste recycler. The hard drive should be removed and destroyed, and the battery and boards recycled properly. National Recycling collects dead laptops free.
Can I get a tax deduction for donating a laptop?
No. Donations of goods, including laptops, don’t qualify for a deduction under Section 80G. Only money donations to eligible organisations do.
Should I wipe my laptop before donating it to an NGO?
Yes. Do a full reset with the “Clean data” option on Windows 10 or 11, or Erase All Content and Settings on a Mac. Don’t rely on the receiver to do it.
Do you pass donated laptops on to NGOs?
Some working laptops donated to us go to NGOs, but only after all data is wiped and the laptop is checked as fit for reuse. If we are not confident on either point, the laptop is not passed on: the drive is destroyed and the laptop is recycled through a licensed recycling partner.
