Old Laptop Scrap Price in Mumbai: What Your Laptop Is Worth

A complete laptop that won’t switch on fetches ₹400–₹500. An old one that still works fetches ₹500–₹3,500, depending on its age and parts. Here’s how we price old laptops, why per-kilo rates mislead, and when donating makes more sense.

How to find your laptop’s year

  • Windows: press Win + R, type msinfo32, and look at Processor. “Core i5-4200U” means 4th generation, roughly 2013–2014.
  • Dead laptop: the sticker underneath shows the model. Send us a photo of it.
  • Mac: Apple menu > About This Mac shows the year.

What decides an old laptop’s price

1. Does it switch on?

The single biggest factor. A working laptop can be reused, so it’s worth more than its parts. A dead one is valued for its board, RAM, screen and metals.

2. Processor generation

Anything older than about 2012 struggles with current software, so its value sits close to scrap. 3rd–6th gen Core i5 laptops still sell as basic refurbished machines.

3. Is it complete?

Missing batteries, screens or drives cut the price roughly in half. A laptop with its original charger is quoted higher.

4. Screen and body

A cracked panel or broken hinge on a working laptop means repair before reuse, so it’s priced closer to the dead rate.

5. RAM and storage

8 GB RAM or an SSD lifts a 2012–2016 laptop toward the top of its range. 2 GB and an old hard disk sits at the bottom.

6. Brand and series

Business series (ThinkPad, Latitude, EliteBook, ProBook) are easier to refurbish and fetch more than budget consumer models of the same year.

Why we don’t quote old laptops per kilo

You’ll see “laptop scrap ₹150–₹500 per kg” on trade listings. Those are prices dealers pay each other for sorted, bulk lots of boards or bodies, not what a household gets for a whole laptop.

A typical laptop weighs 1.5–2.5 kg. Pricing it by weight undervalues a working machine and overvalues one with the RAM and drive pulled out. So for individual laptops we quote per piece, by condition and age, as in the table above.

Per-kilo pricing does make sense for loose accessories (chargers, keyboards, cables) and for mixed office e-waste, which we buy at ₹43–₹47/kg.

What’s inside an old laptop

  • Motherboard – the most valuable part, contains small amounts of gold, copper and palladium
  • RAM sticks – reusable if they work
  • Screen panel – reused for repairs
  • Hard drive / SSD – wiped or physically destroyed, never resold with data
  • Lithium-ion battery – must go to a licensed recycler; fire risk if dumped
  • Plastic and aluminium body – recycled as material
